During the DSpace Developers Meeting on Jan 25, 2012 this issue was brought up and discussed. See the discussion in our chat logs (starts around [20:50])

            http://irclogs.duraspace.org/index.php?date=2012-01-25

            Summary:

            • Many Committers all felt this feature would be a great idea, and would be a flashy new feature that many users would like.

At this point in time, we are in need of a volunteer developer or two to begin investigating some of these options and/or begin implementation. If anyone is interested in taking the lead on this project or providing extra support/help, please let us know (add a comment to this ticket or email us on dspace-devel)

Hardy Pottinger (Missouri) mentioned he was already investigating a few potential open source technologies that may be of use: Multivio ( https://www.multivio.org/ ) for page turning and PanoJS ( http://code.google.com/p/panojs/ ) for images Peter Dietz (Ohio State) mentioned that they had started developing a "book reader" XMLUI Theme for DSpace a while back. But, the project was never finished (and remains in a buggy/unfinished state). However, the initial code is available publicly at: https://github.com/osulibraries/xmlui-webapp/tree/master/themes/book-reader At this point in time, we are in need of a volunteer developer or two to begin investigating some of these options and/or begin implementation. This issue depends on DS-1193 (never mind the title), because if you use an external renderer like Google Docs (which is a great choice for PDF and office documents), you cannot let it render files which are not publicly accessible (it would just try to render the DSpace "access denied" HTML page).

So you need to have this information about bitstream anonymous access available, which is what DS-1193 does.

I thought this functionality would be crafted to version 5 of DSpace:

I would suggest using the djatoka IIPImage Viewer and Internet Archive BookReader, both are OpenSource.

An example is the use of both the Braziliana:

Hi Wesley and others watching this ticket,

This ticket still needs a volunteer developer to help implement it (see the status of the ticket above). Thanks for the suggestions regarding options. DSpace is developed collaboratively by volunteers from many institutions around the world. At this point in time, the ticket is in a "holding pattern" as we do not yet have a developer with the time to work on it. I know this is of high interest to many institutions though, so I'm hopeful that someone will be able to help provide a solution soon.
