Deleting objects via "Delete members of this collection" creates orphans

    • Type: Bug
    • Status: In Progress
    • Priority: Minor
    • Resolution: Unresolved
    • Affects Version/s: 7.x-1.10
    • Fix Version/s: None

If you delete an object from its Manage->Properties page, whether that object is a Collection, Book, or Newspaper Issue, its children are also deleted. This is expected behaviour.

However, if you delete the object from its parent's Collection screen ("Delete members of this collection"), that object is deleted, but its children are not – they remain in the repository as orphans, whose RELS-EXT proclaims a relationship to the parent that no longer exists.

Orphans will turn up in search results and can be accessed if you know their URL, but are otherwise invisible. If you create a new collection object with the same PID as the one you deleted, those child objects will appear in the new collection.

Deleting an object should have consistent results regardless of which direction you approach it from. Proposing that deleting an object via its parent's Collection management screen should also delete that object's children, just as it does when deleting via its own Properties screen.
